Let's say that you are tired of pulling up the home page and seeing a list of 1000 nodes to run through. How can you sort them dynamically? Custom properties requires fields to be filled out each time you add a new device. If someone mis-spells the custom property, a new group is created. You can create a dynamic group query that sorts them based upon common naming standards. However, if new devices are added that don't match the dynamic group queries, they do not show up at all.
Why not create a default group option. A radio button under grouping that allows you the option to take nodes that don't match your custom group queries and puts them in a default group.
