I live and vacation in northern Minnesota--sometimes I get up into Ontario for vacation time, too. I love the wilderness and the quiet and clean air and clear water--and the wildlife. Otters, beavers, ducks, woodpeckers, owls, fishers, mink, wolves--wonderful stuff!
But one of the best experiences (for me) is to happen upon a moose when I'm canoeing or hiking. There's never been any problem (for me) with them--I respect them and give them a wide berth--they have the right of way at all times.
The population of moose in Minnesota has been declining rapidly and alarmingly for the past few years, and my trips to the wilderness have been sans moose for many summers now. But two days ago I was boating a river in Ontario and rounded a bend to find a moose standing chest deep in the water, eating contentedly. I slowed down and grabbed for the camera as the moose walked up the bank to watch me slowly drift by.
How long as it been since you've seen a moose in the wild? Not on TV or the Internet or in a zoo, but in-person in the wild?
