Recommended configuration for HTTP URL monitoring and the SAM Polling Agent

This is just a note for those that see strange up/down status flapping with HTTP/HTTPS monitoring when the node is monitored with the SAM polling agent instead of WMI or SNMP.

After you switch the node's polling method from WMI/SNMP to the SAM Polling Agent, make sure you select the "Agentless" preffered polling method for any applied SAM templates that contain HTTP or HTTPS components or you'll experience up/down status flapping.

Example:

In my environment we have a SAM template with two component monitors - one is an HTTP and the other is an HTTPS. Both require domain authentication to access the IIS page.

When the preferred polling method for the SAM template is set to "Agent", you'll experience status flapping every few minutes which might trigger a ton of spam alerts.

First you'll see the status as shown below:

Wait a minute then refresh the page and you'll see the status go right back to "Up".

Wash, rinse, repeat. This will happen every few minutes, off and on 'forever'.

To fix, just change the preferred polling method for the applied template in the Advanced section:

SIDE NOTE: The true fix to this would be to use the AppInsight for IIS monitoring and forget about performing individual HTTP/HTTPS component monitors, but there still might be a valid reason for needing individual templates such as if the URL is served from a Windows Server 2003 server (AppInsight for IIS does not support IIS 6.0), or if the URL is hosted in the cloud with a 3rd party.

I hope this helps some of you that might be experiencing the same issues we were.
