What are you guys/gals doing when defining device guidelines ? As an example, how do you document what metrics are captured on a MS 2008 server ? Do you monitor strictly physical interfaces and just the c:\ drive ? How are you documenting these types of things. I am looking for a modular, and scaleable way to document these types of things. Attached is a spreadsheet where I exported a subset of our device types and all the possible metrics (not including SAM) found when adding a device.
I have been thinking about this in terms of machine type and monitor able metrics. From my understanding machine type is the most specific indication of a devices OS, I cannot think of a more granular category when categorizing devices.
SolarWinds is a somewhat new tool at my current place of employment, I am attempting to provide a significant, scalable, and thorough set of documentation. Documenting device types and what is monitored is at the top of my list. Thank you.
